6. “24” (2001-10)

Here’s one that seemed like it was doomed right out of the gate, and that was even before the tragic events of 9/11 made the pilot — and, particularly, its climactic passenger jet explosion — seem in poor taste. How, everyone asked, could someone make a real-time drama that told a single story over the course of an entire season? And wasn’t it a bad sign that the show’s writers acknowledged from the get-go that they didn’t have most of the story mapped out in advance? But what seemed like unfortunate timing with 9/11 actually worked in the show’s favor, as it turned out the idea of a lone wolf using extreme methods to battle terrorists was exactly what America was looking for at the time. And though the improvisational nature of the plotting led to occasional missteps like amnesia or the cougar, overall the writers and Kiefer Sutherland made Jack Bauer into the iconic action hero of the ’00s.

There is no way King of the Hill is a better show than 24, and Firefly was excellent but you can’t possibly put it above a show such as 24. Like 24, The X-Files had a big impact on drama series but it also had a lot of bad standalone episodes, something 24 never had.

I can understand putting Arrested Development above 24, it is indeed pretty awesome, and The Simpsons, too, I guess (but only because of the phenomenon it has become, not the quality of the show since the 00s).

In case you missed it, FOX aired a 3-minute segment on 24 (for scripted series, only The X-Files, The Simpsons, Family Guy, Married with Children That ’70 Show got such an honor).

Terminator The Sarah Connor Chronicles and 24 deserve the top spots.
