Jimmy Smits cast in 24: Legacy as Senator John Donovan

We are happy to confirm that Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winner Jimmy Smits has been tapped for the key role of “John Donovan” in the FOX drama pilot, 24: LEGACY, from 20th Century Fox Television. Howard Gordon, Manny Coto, Evan Katz and Brian Grazer will serve as executive producers on the pilot, which will be directed by “24” veteran Stephen Hopkins.

Smits joins previously announced cast members Corey Hawkins, Miranda Otto and Teddy Sears.

Smits will portray “John Donovan,” a powerful U.S. Senator with higher political aspirations, who is married to the blazing smart former head of CTU (Miranda Otto).

Smits is coming off a successful run in the final three seasons of FX’s “Sons of Anarchy,” and is currently completing a one-season commitment in Baz Luhrman’s “The Get Down.”

Smits is repped by UTA, Brillstein Entertainment Partners, Tom Hoberman.

Strong cast. I sincerely hope the show isn’t flop, as I’m completely open to the idea of a Jack-less run of 24. Looking forward to the pilot, which, I believe, starts shooting next month, no?

Certainly—but my open mind is conditioned on the show/pilot not being a disaster. If it is, I’m out. I’m die-hard for the show, but still view this show through a critical lens.

I enjoy Jimmy Smits when he was on NYPD Blue. Excited about his new role as the David Palmer-like character in the upcoming 24: Legacy.

the pilot is fine, its very simalr to old one and please don’t judge 24 becuase of a pilot when we all now the entire thing takes place In one day.

Did anyone say or think any of those things though? I don’t think Palmer, CTU or the 24 episode format were ever make or break things for people about 24. Don’t get me wrong, I think the “no jack no 24” mindset is stupid, but no-one ever thought the same about the things you mention.

I like Jimmy Smits. He seems to play great parts in really shit things, like Senator Bill Organa in Star Wars, and most probably this.

Question for anyone: If FOX does not pick up 24:legacy after viewing the pilot, will we be able to watch the pilot? If so, where would it be shown?
