If you’re still reeling from last night’s totally mind-blowing episode of 24, we feel you. Really, we do. And that’s why we’re here to offer up some equally mind-blowing intel on the dreaded series finale (yes, time really is almost up).

And have you heard of a little thing we’re calling the fan-freaking-tastic 24 movie?! Oh yeah, there’s some scoop on that, too. Now about the finale…

We caught up with the cast and creators of 24 at the finale party last week (sobfest!) and learned some pretty interesting things about the series ender—for one, it really will be end of 24 life as we know it, regardless of the impending flick.

“The movie is another thing entirely,” show runner Howard Gordon says. In fact, when we asked Kiefer Sutherland if the finale will spill over into the film, he squashed the theory right then and there. “It’s less of a cliff-hanger as much as it is a personal ending between a few of the characters, which is very intimate for us, when we’re not blowing up the planet. It was very wonderful for us to make and I hope the audience likes it as well. I’m very happy with it.”

Echoes Howard: “It’s exciting, it’s emotional and it just feels right. The ending fits somewhere between Jack dying and a happily ever after.”

“The series really lends itself to the movie, but having said that, it is a satisfying ending,” Mary Lynn Rajskub, who plays fan fave Chloe, says. “Things are coming to a head in a pretty exciting way. This whole year has been a really strong year to go out on and the ending is just as strong.”

And according to Mary Lynn, this isn’t even the end: “I know for sure that I’ll be Chloe for at least a few years from now.” Even longer if we’re to take the following Kiefer statement to heart: “One of the things that is stopping this [finale party] from being a very sad night for me is we’re all going to be working together on the films,” he explains (yes, films plural!). “I don’t have to say goodbye to Jack Bauer just yet.” And thankfully, neither do we.

Kiefer also says that moving into the end, Jack experiences “moments” of happiness, but “his are unfortunately fleeting. It’s certainly something we’re pursuing.” Promises Mary Lynn, “Chloe going to be a changed person by the end of this, too. She’s going to confront Jack in a pretty major way by the end.”

As for the much-talked-about movie, Kiefer was happy to chat about what will become of our favorite TV superagents. “It’s going to be a real fresh start for us,” he says. “It’ll be the first time we’re not doing it in real time. The film will be a two-hour representation of a 24 hour day, which alleviates the writers of the responsibility of writing in real time, which is unbelievably difficult.”

The whole process is progressing nicely, too, he tells us: “We just got a screenplay, we’re working on that. It’s in the proper stages and we can start to hopefully put together a production schedule.”

Going into the end, and what appears to be another beginning, Kiefer really just has this to say: “We’ve got our fingers crossed.” And for the record, so do we.

Showrunner Howard Gordon was interviewed on Dana Walsh’s death, her character, and what this means for Jack for the remaining episodes. There’s some interesting info in here on how they decided to make her a mole.

TVGuide.com: Jack didn’t have to kill Dana. Why did he?
Howard Gordon:
That’s exactly the point. In this episode, everybody is taken to a place that they’ve never been. We struggled with writing it; the actors struggled with acting it. It goes to the core of what Jack is experiencing right now: He’s the judge and jury and executioner. He’s taking what he perceives to be justice in his own hands. Dana has culpability in what’s happened on this day. It defines the level of darkness he’s descended to.

TVGuide.com: Why would you say this episode is important?
Gordon:
To me, this is the episode where Jack’s trajectory really gets defined and comes into focus, what we’re going to see for the balance of the season. This is a very crystallizing moment. When Jack kills Dana unarmed, that’s the first execution in his train of justice — or vengeance, depending on how you look at it.

TVGuide.com: Do you think Dana’s death carries any sort of redemption for the character?
Gordon:
Whatever redemption there is for the character is in that very sad moment where you realize that she actually did love Cole. For the first time, the onion is peeled down to the nub and you see her vulnerable for the first moment. It’s pathetic because she’s obviously a sociopath, but she meant to reverse the position she put herself in.

TVGuide.com: You’ve had to do your share of defending Dana to the fans.
Gordon:
She became an early target for certain people. People love to hate her, and they didn’t quite know why. Very early on, this story became this crazy improvisation. We always knew she was someone with a past; we didn’t quite know how deep that past went. [Executive producer Alex Gansa] had an idea: What if she’s a mole?

TVGuide.com: Because that never happens on 24!
Gordon:
That’s one of the hazards of the show. We were all so scared to say it. We don’t even allow ourselves to use some of the more obvious tools in the arsenal, but once Alex said it, it clarified the character for us. So we were able to back-trace it so she’d have a double-secret identity. It all came to the fore in Monday’s episode. You realize that this woman fell in love with Cole. That was real. She tried to get herself out of the situation she got herself in. It really explains the improbable nature of how a juvenile delinquent from Rock Springs was able to manufacture an identity and insert herself into this top-secret organization. As improbable as it is, in true 24 fashion, it made its own kind of crazy sense.

TVGuide.com: Do you think the fans were too hard on her?
Gordon:
I think the fans were a little too hard on her. We all have Starbuck [Sackhoff's character on Battlestar Galactica] in our mind. She’s played these strong roles, and here she was playing this demure, almost prim, goody-goody analyst in direct counterpoint to Chloe. There was something that was too good to be true about her. We had this hidden card that nobody knew we were playing. People were judging her prematurely.

TVGuide.com: What about the parole officer stuck in the wall? Is he just going to rot there?
Gordon:
We made various attempts to reintegrate the fact that there’s the body in the wall, but we justified it by saying the body wouldn’t start to smell for another couple of hours. Right around, say, hour 25.

So is this Jack’s lowest point? Or does it get worse?
Gordon:
Jack is as about as emotionally damaged as he’s been now. He’s descending right now. The finale is a complex ending. It’s not as tragic as it could have been. It’s not entirely unhappy. But he doesn’t walk off into the sunset.

Jack Bauer

This sort of conflicts with other prior information from Howard Gordon so take it with a grain of salt, but Kristin Dos Santos from E! Online is suggesting that Jack will have a happy ending in the series finale.

Nate in Boston: Please tell us you know some scoop about the 24 finale!

We have it on good authority that Jack Bauer will actually get a happy ending…whatever that means in the land of 24.

Nice preview clip (Jack Bauer, Cole Ortiz, and Chloe O’Brian) from episode 20. I love the final few seconds especially.

Thanks CinemaBlend.

Leslie Hope, Annie Wersching, Kiefer Sutherland, Mary Lynn Rajskub, and Kim Raver are interviewed on camera briefly. Kiefer and Mary Lynn tease a bit about the series finale and the others share some of their memories.

Leslie Hope had perhaps the best 24 quote I’ve ever heard, summing up her story arc: “I was kidnapped, I was raped, I had amnesia, my daughter went missing, I thought she was dead, there was a fiery explosion of a car, and then I was shot in the pregnant guts.”

Funny stuff, as for 24-related information she says “I’m kinda going up against Jack in a big way” also that the scenes between her and Kiefer in the last week of the finale were very emotional.

Nearly lethal confrontation between these two? whoaaaa!

Question: I’m literally dying for some 24 scoop. Please, give me some! – Daniel
Ausiello:
The May 24 series finale will find Jack squaring off against his most formidable adversary yet: Chloe! “Chloe and Jack are in a real face-off,” reveals executive producer Howard Gordon. “And Chloe has to decide between her duty [as head of CTU] and her friendship and allegiance to Jack. Their relationship gets put to the test in a way it’s never been tested before. It’s a collision course that culminates in the finale. It’s about as hairy a confrontation as you can possibly imagine, and it’s a nearly lethal one.” Playing those scenes was “really fun” and “very emotional,” says Mary Lynn Rajskub. “[It's] kind of crazy…what happens between Jack and Chloe. I’ve never done anything like that.”

Here’s a promotional picture from FOX of Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) in the 24 series finale airing on May 24th. He’s carrying his extra large “Jack Sack” from episode 19 which we know is filled with all sorts of guns, ammo, and weapons courtesy of his buddy Jim Ricker (played by Michael Madsen).

Who is Jack pointing the gun at? We’ll have to wait another month to find out!

From TV Guide’s Mickey O’Connor:

Since 24 is almost over, everyone is going to die now, right? — Mark G.
MICKEY:
Wow, that’s a dark spirit you got there, fella. Welcome! The continuing movie talk has squelched the idea of Jack making the ultimate sacrifice in the series finale. But I do know of two surprising deaths that will take place before the show’s May 24 finale. One will be shockingly emotional; the other will just be shocking.

Just about anything is possible in terms of death with this being the final season (I never thought they’d take out Renee), but here are some of my predictions:

  • Cole Ortiz: Freddie Prinze Jr. was cast in a pilot “No Heroics” for ABC on March 18 – the day before the final episode pair started filming.
  • Dana Walsh: Katee Sackhoff was already filming a new pilot “Boston’s Finest” for ABC on March 18 (again, the day before episodes 23/24 started).
  • Ethan Kanin: Bob Gunton recently teased “earth-shaking” shocks
