Howard Gordon spills first details on 24 Season 8

It’s been more than a year since Fox’s 24 ended its run, but buzz surrounding a big-screen feature picking up where the Kiefer Sutherland thriller left off still lives large.

Showrunner Howard Gordon, on hand Thursday at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour to promote Showtime’s Homeland, noted that conversations are “definitely happening” to take the franchise to the big screen.

“There’s an institutional desire to do it,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “I know Kiefer wants to do it, we all want to do it. It’s just about finding the right script and not just doing it to do it.”

Gordon, reflecting on the dramatic thriller’s conclusion, noted that completing the series was an uphill battle and, while proud of the work he’s done, is nervous about what a feature would entail. [click to continue…]

Since several people have asked me, here are all six of the deleted scenes found on the 24 Season 8 DVD.

There aren’t any audio commentaries for the deleted scenes this time around, so there’s no way to know why these scenes were cut. Most of them were probably removed for time reasons. [click to continue…]

Jack Bauer at gunpoint in 24 Series Finale

Jack Bauer at gunpoint in the 24 Series Finale

Since I posted all the stories praising the series finale, it’s only fair that I post a differing opinion too. Cinema Blend is listing the 24 series finale as one of their “Biggest TV Disappointments Of 2010″ and here’s what they’ve got to say:

Jack Bauer’s Dismal Ending – 24

The season finale of 24 wasn’t bad. It resolved most of the issues for the season and even delivered on a few big moments, including Jack almost being executed and a very touching final conversation between Jack and Chloe that surely made plenty of die hard 24 fans tear up. Did the finale leave a window open for the movie? Sure but as a series closer, Jack should’ve gone out in a blaze of glory, either buried in medals for his acts of bravery or just plain buried (because some great stories have to end that way). Instead, 24 ended with Jack all alone, injured, grieving and a wanted man who now has to go into hiding. Potential movie or not 24 deserved a better ending and so did we.

24 Series Finale Jack Bauer

The 24 series finale came in at number six on TV Guide’s “Best episodes of 2010″ list, beating out the Lost series finale (which came in eighth place) among others. Here’s what they had to say:

6. “Day 8: 3:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m.,” 24

24‘s final hour ended on a complicated note — President Taylor realized the grave error of her ways, while Charles Logan went down for good. But it was Jack, hurt, spent and forced to go on the run, whose predicament was both familiar and bittersweet for those fans wanting closure. His tearful goodbye with Chloe — appropriately via video screen — broke our hearts.

Jack’s final call to Chloe O’Brian in the 24 Series Finale made TV Guide’s #14 unforgettable TV moment of 2010. “For a year that had a lot of big finales, that was definitely one of the best ones,” said entertainment journalist Jim Halterman. “It perfectly tied up the series and of course left it open for the movie.”

Earlier this month FOX asked fans to vote on Jack Bauer’s greatest lines at JackBauersGreatest.com and now the voting period is over and winners have been chosen.

Overall Winner (best of all seasons)

The very final scene of the series (Jack and Chloe saying their goodbyes) has been chosen by 24 fans as the best line. Hard to argue with this pick.

Here’s the other winners: [click to continue…]

The people have spoken: 24 is the best series finale as voted on by TV.com readers, beating out both Lost and Heroes, two other long-running dramas.

24 Best Series Finale Poll

Back when I first posted about this last month it was winning with nearly half of the votes. A well-deserved win – great ending to a fantastic series. Long live 24!

24 has received five Emmy nominations for its final season, bringing it’s total nominations to 68 across the entire series run. Unfortunately no nominations were given to Kiefer Sutherland or Annie Wersching (both gave incredible performances), nor was 24 nominated for best drama.

Sarah Clarke

Mike Gencarelli: You played Nina Myers in “24″, with the show finally seeing its end, how do you feel?
Sarah Clarke: I did. It was like an end of an era to see the show end. When I went to the finale party it was great to see so much of the crew that was still involved. The fact they they were able to keep it such a viable show for eight seasons is great. We didn’t think it was going to get past season two.

2. Most Apropos Send-Off: In the end, 24‘s series finale contains all the show’s hallmark plot elements: the exposure of a cover-up, a trusted ally and implausible surveillance equipment. After President Taylor admits her role in the Russians’ wrongdoings, she offers Jack a head-start to leave the country. Jack, whose image is on giant, Truman Show-like monitors at CTU’s makeshift HQ, has a teary, almost romantic goodbye, with Chloe, after which she switches off the monitor and the clock counts backward down to zero. Now about that movie…

Here’s the full video message that Jack sent to his daughter Kim in the 24 series finale. We saw parts of this throughout the final episode, but this is the entire thing. It comes from the Fox.com website but was put on YouTube by virginieb20 – thanks!

Here’s the FOX promo pics from last nights 24 series finale (I hate typing the words series finale). I gotta say, the graffiti wall was really cool and unique imagery for the final scene.

THR: So Jack lives. I know you’ve got the movie planned, but how much did you seriously consider killing him in the finale?

Gordon: We certainly considered it. We considered killing him earlier (in the season) as an off-rhythm thing. But every time we went there and penciled it out, it didn’t feel satisfying. It felt frustrating or it felt affected or something.

Gordon also spoke with Entertainment Weekly. He is asked about many things including the fan reaction to Dana Walsh and the death of Renee Walker. Gordon was also asked about the lack of returning characters – where was Tony Almeida, Aaron Pierce, Mandy, and Alan Wilson?
