Anil Kapoor at 24 Season 8 premiere on AXN

Anil Kapoor

Here’s a surprise – 24‘s Anil Kapoor (who starred as Omar Hassan in the final season) has purchased the rights to the television series and will be making an Indian adaptation. Kapoor will play the role of Jack Bauer and plans to cast “top actors” in the leading roles.

Anil Kapoor has bought the rights of one of the most popular American tv series, 24. The show, which ran for eight seasons, also had Kapoor in a cameo in the finale season. His production company has now bought the remake rights and he will adapt it for the Indian telly.

Says a source close to the actor, “It took him a year of negotiations with the American producers and creators of 24 to crack the deal. The international team of 24 will be involved with the making. The show will air in Hindi and will also be dubbed in various regional languages. Kapoor is in talks with India’s top channels and the show will air sometime next year.

In this counter-terrorism drama, Anil will playing the iconic character of Jack Bauer, which is played by Kiefer Sutherland in the original. The show will be shot on a big canvas and will have top actors in leading roles. Anil confirms, “I am really happy that the makers of the show have put their faith in me for its Indian version. When I was shooting for it in the US, I kept wishing that I could take something like this to my Indian audience. Now that wish is close to getting fulfilled.”

When quizzed about stepping into Jack Bauer’s shoes, he says, “It’s a huge honour, but I am anxious as Jack is an iconic character like Jack Sparrow or Batman. He is loved all over the world. It’s a great responsibility for me as an entrepreneur and as actor. I will try my best and hope I can do even 50 per cent of what they have done. If I achieve a little of what Keifer has, I will be happy.”

Interestingly, Jack’s most repeated line on the show is ‘Son of a b***h!’ Wonder how Anil will translate that in Hindi!

Now that the new TV season has started I thought it would be interesting to take a look at where the 24 crew went after the series ended a few months ago. Fans that have watched the DVD bonus features probably know that the cast and crew were very close to each other, and that’s proven by this list – many of them chose to work together on future projects.

Chip Johannessen became showrunner of Showtime’s hit series Dexter last December, and brought along some 24 crew with him including Manny Coto (writer and executive producer), director Milan Cheylov, costume designer Jim Lapidus, and the Emmy-winning David Latham (editor). One of his first orders of business was creating a new recurring character named FBI Agent Walker – nice! Also look out for Peter Weller (Christopher Henderson from Season 5) to show up soon as a recurring character.

Anil Kapoor as President Omar Hassan

Anil Kapoor is going great guns. After the international acclaim following Slumdog Millionaire, the evergreen star is making his debut on international television with the final season of American series 24. He describes the action drama as “bigger than the biggest” he has done in India.

“This small screen (24) was bigger than the big screen that I have done in India. It was bigger than the biggest that I’ve ever done,” Anil, who played a game show host in Slumdog Millionaire that fetched him international visibility, said in a telephonic interview from Mumbai.

“For example, the scale of every episode was bigger than any of the films I’ve done in the past. The entire series is worth $125-150 million. I’ve never done such a big show in my career. It was totally very special,” added the 50-year-old.

Not exactly 24 related, but ‘The Soup’ host Joel McHale pointed out some completely inappropriate comments made to Anil Kapoor by ‘Good Day LA’ host Steve Edwards in his April 5th video interview.

TV Guide Magazine Daily Review – Chuck, 24: Happy and Unhappy Endings

Anil Kapoor’s final hours as President Hassan were his finest, clocking his protector Jack and giving himself over to the terrorists in hopes of averting the bomb blast. (He cut it close. There were only seven seconds left when the doomed Tarin stopped the timer.) In scenes of unusual reflection, Kapoor convincingly portrayed both Hassan’s defiant idealism in his push for peace and deep sorrow that he couldn’t win over the militant insurgents now deciding his bloody fate. He died a true hero’s death.

iFMagazine TV Review: 24 – SEASON EIGHT – ’6 a.m to 8 a.m.’

Again, great stuff, and wonderful performances by all. Wersching has really had an amazing range to play this year, and her subtle wounded looks have said it all in many moments that would have been too broad by lesser actors. She’s incredible and if Jack deserves to be with anyone, it’s Wersching’s Renee who is a perfect fit.

This two-hour episode will be hard to beat, but with the clock ticking toward the end of 24 as we know it, it’s nice to have it back on its feet and heading toward the finish line with clarity, purpose and, well, Jack Bauer kicking ass and not taking names.

CNN TV Recap: The one Jack didn’t save on ’24′

Now, raise your hand if you actually believed Jack would save him, because I did too. As Jack and Renee made their way into the apartment building, you could feel the tension building to unprecedented levels. I thought the entire situation played out as one of the season’s finest, and the writers gave us more than we could absorb. Renee noticing the blonde wig on the floor and being first to pull the trigger as her life depended on it was riveting and well done.

“24″ was dead on last night. These two hours were arguably the finest of the season, and that momentum has been building for more than a month with great show after great show. For all the grumbling along the way, “24″ has delivered repeatedly in recent weeks, and as I changed the channel to see the ending of “David versus Goliath”, I was satisfied and spent.

EW ’24′ recap: Heady times for poor Hassan

I love these special two-hour installments of 24; feels like Christmas in April. And there was lots to accomplish tonight, especially given how obvious it appeared last week that Fantastic Sam would surrender to the IRK in exchange for saving 58,000 New Yorkers from three agonizing, radiation-filled days.

Some posters took issue with how I failed to celebrate Anil Kapoor’s mad skillz in the gunfight last week, but that didn’t mean I’ve lost appreciation for his work. Kapoor was in fine form again tonight, starting with the heated argument he had with Dalia over her wanting to join him on his fateful mission. Crazy good stuff, even if I started to suspect that that it wouldn’t end well for her and Kayla.

Anil Kapoor with his second interview of the day (still more to come – he’ll be on Attack of the Show in a few minutes). Should be obvious based on all the press he’s doing that tonights double-hour episode is a pivotal time for the Omar Hassan character…

Anil Kapoor interview

March 22, 2010 · 0 comments

You finally made your debut on the small screen with 24. How was the experience?
Television abroad is completely different from what it is like over here. It’s very mainstream. Whether it’s the infrastructure, the logistics, the actors, the money or the budget — it’s as good as a big budget film. It was like working on a feature.

But it’s still television…
People over there are in awe of Jack Bauer… of Kiefer Sutherland. They are fans of TV shows. Ben Stiller was telling me that for his wife’s birthday party, he asked Keifer to come as a guest to surprise her. That’s the way they look at Jack Bauer’s character. And it looks like the eighth season is going to be the last; that’s what the speculation is so far. So it’s a big thing for me to be a part of the last season of a show like that.

How has the response to 24 been?
I’ve got great reviews. They keep reviewing the various episodes one by one, on and off, and I keep getting good reviews about them. One says, Anil Kapoor continues to impress. It’s been great exposure for me. And this is the kind of show that is being played in the bedrooms of most of America and it just adds to my resume, my body of work, for the future.

Did you have to work very hard to play the role of President Omar Hassan?
Of course. I was playing a Middle Eastern president, so I had to work hard, read Words of Peace edited by Irwin Abrams, go on YouTube to watch the body language. I went through all the speeches of the leaders of the world. I bought all the books and read about those countries, their history… met a lot of Middle Eastern people and learnt to talk like them.

Did you have to do the same for Slumdog Millionaire as well?
Yes, of course. I had to practice a lot. It didn’t happen without any effort.

Were you nervous about working in Hollywood?
Yes, a little. But I was preparing myself. The crew over there and the actors are more organised. Of course, there are creative discussions, but they’re more or less prepared. So I decided to be totally prepared as well. They approached me after having heard of me as a popular actor in India. And they must have had certain expectations in terms of, ‘what can he bring to us?’ So, I went as prepared as I could and asked them, in turn, ‘what do you have to offer?’

In terms of the number of movies and the variety of roles you have done, you are a far more accomplished actor than Kiefer Sutherland… And they gave me that kind of treatment too. On 24, as well as when I was working with Danny Boyle on Slumdog… A lot of Indian actors, who have done roles internationally, tend to get typecast with time…
