A bunch of former 24 castmates and colleagues came out to support Howard Gordon yesterday at the book signing for his debut novel Gideon’s War (in stores now, read our review).
Actors Dennis Haysbert (David Palmer), Carlos Bernard (Tony Almeida), Gregory Itzin (Charles Logan), Peter Weller (Christopher Henderson), Chris Diamantopoulos (Rob Weiss) and former 24 writer Evan Katz showed up to lend their support. Check out the pictures below: [click to continue…]
On Sunday (Dec. 12), a large group of friends, family and colleagues gathered at the Darryl Zanuck Theater on the 20th Century Fox studio lot in Los Angeles, Calif., to pay tribute to casting director Peggy Kennedy, who died on Friday, Dec. 3, at the age of 65 (a number which, during her life, appeared to have been a source of comic dispute) after a brief battle with cancer.
Now that the new TV season has started I thought it would be interesting to take a look at where the 24 crew went after the series ended a few months ago. Fans that have watched the DVD bonus features probably know that the cast and crew were very close to each other, and that’s proven by this list – many of them chose to work together on future projects.
Dexter
Chip Johannessen became showrunner of Showtime’s hit series Dexter last December, and brought along some 24 crew with him including Manny Coto (writer and executive producer), director Milan Cheylov, costume designer Jim Lapidus, and the Emmy-winning David Latham (editor). One of his first orders of business was creating a new recurring character named FBI Agent Walker – nice! Also look out for Peter Weller (Christopher Henderson from Season 5) to show up soon as a recurring character.
Remember last year when 24 had a panel at Comic-Con? Those were the good ol’ days. Anyway, here’s video of the Comic-Con panel Q&A session for NBC’s new TV series The Event which is getting a lot of buzz. 24 fans should keep an eye out on this show which seems to have a very similar vibe (and the same time slot – Mondays at 9PM starting on September 20th).
EXCLUSIVE: NBC’s newly picked up drama series The Event is looking to become the new 24 and now it is close to tapping one of the key writer-producers behind the departing real-time Fox drama, Evan Katz, as showrunner. Katz is finalizing a two-year overall deal with Universal Media Studios, which produces The Event. Under the seven-figure pact, he will executive produce and run the series created by Nick Wauters.
The Event is a conspiracy thriller that follows Sean Walker (Jason Ritter), an everyman who investigates the mysterious disappearance of his fiancée (Sarah Roemer), and unwittingly begins to expose the biggest cover-up in U.S. history. Co-starring in the pilot are Blair Underwood as the newly elected U.S. President Martinez, Laura Innes, Scott Patterson, Ian Anthony Dale and 24 alum Željko Ivanek. On the series, Katz will serve as an executive producer alongside Steve Stark and Jeffrey Reiner, who directed the pilot. Wauters will serve as co-executive producer.
WME-repped Katz, who had been wooed by a couple of different pilots at NBC, joined 24 at the beginning of the second season as a consulting producer and has been an executive producer since Season 4. He won a WGA Award for the ground-breaking drama in 2004 and shared a best series Emmy with the rest of the series’ producing team in 2006.
In the 8/21 issue of Entertainment Weekly, writer and executive producer Evan Katz gives the scoop on Audrey Raines and the future of 24.
No Audrey Raines
With Fox president Kevin Reilly recently hinting that the coming season of 24 may turn out to be its last, longtime fans are counting down the days to a Jack-Audrey reunion. Unfortunately, exec producer Evan Katz says a series-ending story has already been hatched in the event 24 clocks out for good next May – and it doesn’t involve Kiefer Sutherland’s Jack reconnecting with his former love (played by Kim Raver), who lapsed into a catatonic state at the end of Day 6. “Some of the things we’re doing this season preclude [her returning],” he reveals. “So, I think not.”
In attendance were Kiefer Sutherland and Mary Lynn Rajskub along with new cast members Katee Sackhoff, Freddie Prinze Jr, and Anil Kapoor, writers Howard Gordon, David Fury, Evan Katz, Manny Coto, and Brannon Braga and composer Sean Callery.
24-7: The Untold Story was a special feature included on the 24 Season 7 DVD set.
It includes interviews from 24 writers Howard Gordon, Manny Coto, Evan Katz, David Fury, and Brannon Braga. They talk about scrapped plotlines for the seventh season of the show, the Writers Guild of America strike, and more.
On big US television shows, it’s the writers who are in control. They hire the directors, they have the final say on editing, and, of course, they write the scripts. Calling the shots on 24, the US real-time drama that is now careering to the end of its sixth series, is not advisable for those with heart conditions.
“At the beginning of every season, we sit down – maybe eight or nine of us – in a room,” says Evan Katz, 24‘s executive producer and chief writer. “We talk for about two hours a day for weeks and weeks. It’s draining, but what emerges are ideas about story construction, and villains, and settings. We leave that room with a good idea about the first four episodes.”
Only four episodes? What happens after that?
“We don’t worry too much about what happens after that,” says Katz. “We do it on the fly.” [click to continue…]
Jack Bauer’s personal life is as complicated as his professional life.
After thwarting plans for detonating suitcase nukes in Monday’s episode, 24‘s action hero was hit with a staggering good news/bad news scenario: His true love, Audrey Raines (Kim Raver), is not dead, as he had been told, but is being held by his Chinese nemeses.
Raver, back after playing Audrey during 24‘s past two seasons, will describe her character’s situation only in general terms: “Audrey comes back not herself at all. She’s definitely not in a good place.” [click to continue…]
