Joel Surnow

Mary Lynn Rajskub Photoshoot

We have to start with 24 – your most notable television role to date. Some people may not know that the part of Chloe was written specifically for you after the co-creator/producer of 24 Joel Surnow saw you in the film Punch Drunk Love (2002).
Yes. Actually at that time I had only auditioned for comedies and then I got the audition for 24 and I was like, “I don’t think I can do this right now. I don’t really do that. I had a really bad experience with dramas and I don’t think I can take it there today.” My agent said “Well I really think you should take a look at this. It’s a really good show.” I hadn’t watched the show so I went out got the DVDs and my mom is pretty savvy with TV and she had watched it from the beginning, so she was like, “Oh My God, it’s the best show. You have to go!” So the night before the audition, I watched two or three episodes and I thought “Wow, this show is pretty fantastic.”

I was excited to go in but on the page it was me talking to Jack and there was no character written, so it was like “Yes, Jack. No Jack.” Literally no dialog. So I go in and Joel Surnow met me in the hallway and said, “We’re so glad your here. I just love you. I think you’re terrific. I want to write a part for you…” Then he asked me what I think about the show and I said “I think it’s really really good.” He said, “You don’t watch our show do you?” So he totally called me out and I said “No. I just crammed.” {laughs}. So he said he was going to write a part for me and it was like a dream come true-totally amazing.

The full story is I didn’t really think he (Joel) was going to write the part and then when I got the part, I thought it was going to be four episodes. So I show up for work on this drama thinking “OK, I’ve got four weeks of work in this weird trailer where there’s a folding wall and there’s somebody six inches away from me.”

I didn’t think it was going to last but it did.

So did you get a better trailer?
I did. I got a trailer that I could actually take ten steps in and I had my own door. I was like “Wow! I’ve really made it!” {laughs}

When you look back, what was the best part about playing Chloe?

I think it gave me a lot more confidence in dramatic acting, and being able to be so loyal to such a smart character in such a complicated world. I’m just very lucky . I think the best part is that it was such a surprise, you know? Then it kept getting better and better.

Can you give a quick shout out to the fans of 24 who miss you and the show? I think there’s many people still mourning the end of 24.
I know they are. I have people on my Twitter – it’s pretty constant. The fans are always coming up to me and telling me how much they miss the show. It’s a really special show. It’s really beloved. It’s been awesome to be a part of the show. It’s a phenomenon. I have total respect and love. We had a great run and I was sad that it was over, but it’s like “OK, it’s time to move on. Cool.”

Joel Surnow, co-creator of 24

After a three-week journey, The Kennedys has found a home.

The controversial miniseries will world premiere on April 3 on the ReelzChannel, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Producers of the ambitious project from 24 executive producer Joel Surnow and writer Stephen Kronish have struck a deal with the independent, family-owned cable network to air the 8-part miniseires, which was abruptly yanked from the History channel on January 7 amid pressure from the Kennedys over its depiction of the political family. At the time, History owner A&E Television Networks told THR that “after viewing the final product in its totality, we have concluded this dramatic interpretation is not a fit for the History brand.” [click to continue…]

The Kennedy's miniseries poster

The Canadian director of The Kennedys says he made changes to the miniseries whenever the History Channel asked him to and was stunned by its recent decision not to air the shot-in-Toronto project.

“We were very surprised,” Jon Cassar said Tuesday night at a Fox network press event for TV critics. “The actual product takes no political stance one way or the other.”

Cassar, who was raised near Ottawa, was an executive producer on the Fox series 24. [click to continue…]

Jon Cassar The Kennedys

THR reports that History Channel has scrapped plans to air the controversial The Kennedy‘s miniseries which was written by 24 co-creator Joel Surnow, writer Stephen Kronish, and directed by Jon Cassar.

The miniseries was already completed and was History’s most expensive project to date with many well-known stars like Katie Holmes, Greg Kinnear, Barry Pepper, and Tom Wilkinson. It’s still scheduled to air in Canada on March 6, and will still be broadcast internationally. Producers are hoping to move it to a pay cable network. [click to continue…]

Peggy Kennedy 24 casting director

On Sunday (Dec. 12), a large group of friends, family and colleagues gathered at the Darryl Zanuck Theater on the 20th Century Fox studio lot in Los Angeles, Calif., to pay tribute to casting director Peggy Kennedy, who died on Friday, Dec. 3, at the age of 65 (a number which, during her life, appeared to have been a source of comic dispute) after a brief battle with cancer.

Now that the new TV season has started I thought it would be interesting to take a look at where the 24 crew went after the series ended a few months ago. Fans that have watched the DVD bonus features probably know that the cast and crew were very close to each other, and that’s proven by this list – many of them chose to work together on future projects.

Dexter

Dexter logo
Chip Johannessen became showrunner of Showtime’s hit series Dexter last December, and brought along some 24 crew with him including Manny Coto (writer and executive producer), director Milan Cheylov, costume designer Jim Lapidus, and the Emmy-winning David Latham (editor). One of his first orders of business was creating a new recurring character named FBI Agent Walker – nice! Also look out for Peter Weller (Christopher Henderson from Season 5) to show up soon as a recurring character.

Jon Cassar Emmy Award

Looks like another show to watch – Jon Cassar is one of the best directors out there, and David Fury is a very strong writer. Nice little 24 reunion on this show which sounds pretty interesting. Congrats Jon!

EXCLUSIVE: It will be an even larger 24 reunion on Fox’s upcoming prehistoric drama Terra Nova, which is executive produced by Steven Spielberg and Peter Chernin. Long-time 24 director-executive producer Jon Cassar has joined the 13-episode midseason series as an executive producer and regular series director. He joins fellow 24 executive producers Brandon Braga and David Fury who are executive producing Terra Nova. (Braga also serves as the series’ showrunner). Cassar, who won an Emmy for his directing work on Fox/20th TV/Imagine’s 24 and shared the show’s 2006 best drama series Emmy, will direct multiple episodes of Terra Nova following the pilot episode, which is being helmed by Alex Graves. “This is a huge coup for us,” said Dana Walden, chairman of 20th TV, which is co-producing Terra Nova with DreamWorks TV, Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment and Chernin Entertainment. “Jon is one of the best directors we have ever worked with, and this project is a huge priority for our company.”

Here’s a behind the scenes movie from the 24 series wrap. (NOTE: The first 20 seconds have no audio, that’s just the way the video is).

Kiefer Sutherland, Mary Lynn Rajskub, showrunner Howard Gordon, crew members Rodney Charters, Marci Michelle, and more are visible. 24 co-creator Joel Surnow showed up too and gives Kiefer a hug. Loved the “damnit” cake.

Powers Boothe discusses his role of Vice President Noah Daniels in 24‘s sixth season and how Joel Surnow originally had another role in mind for him. Both mutually agreed the previous role wasn’t right and he was later offered the part of Noah Daniels instead.

Joel Surnow appeared on TV Guide channel’s “Scoop This” to promote the upcoming sixth season premiere of 24 – by telling people not to watch!

“Mayhem. It’s gonna be the down-and-dirty season. It’s going to be the hardest-edge season we’ve had so far. Women and children, you may not want to watch. Men who are not alpha male, I don’t think you wanna watch. The only people that wanna watch are commandos, mercenaries, and guys in prison. That’s the only people who are gonna be able to handle this season.”

Jennifer Aniston

Jennifer Aniston has been snubbed in her bid to land a guest spot on her favorite TV drama 24. The star reportedly put her name forward for a part in the show but producers turned her down flat – because she’s “too recognizable.”

Executive producer Joel Surnow says, “You can’t put those people on (the show) because they’re too recognizable. They’ll take you (viewers) out of the reality.”

Aniston wasn’t the only big name to be turned down for a role in “24″ by producers – funnyman Ben Stiller was also deemed too famous for the show, according to TV Guide.

Kiefer Sutherland and Kim Raver at 24 Season 5 DVD launch party

LOS ANGELES — At a 24 party, the dead are among the living.
At Monday’s launch of the Fox thriller’s Season 5 DVD (Fox Home Entertainment, $59.98), held at Hollywood nightspot Les Deux, more than a few of the actors present represented characters who have succumbed during the five-year run of the high-octane, high-casualty series.

Fifth-season goners Carlos Bernard (Tony Almeida), John Allen Nelson (Walt Cummings) and Julian Sands (villainous Vladimir Bierko) attended, as did Penny Johnson Jerald, whose Sherry Palmer fell in Season 3.

The party, which also promoted the new book 24: Behind the Scenes (Insight Editions, $29.95), also featured many of 24‘s living, including Mary Lynn Rajskub (Chloe O’Brian), Kim Raver (Audrey Raines), Roger Cross (Curtis Manning), James Morrison (Bill Buchanan), DB Woodside (President Palmer) and Emmy nominees Gregory Itzin and Jean Smart (former president Logan and his wife, Martha).
