Jon Cassar

Jon Cassar at 24 Press Conference in Munich, Germany

Former 24 director and executive producer Jon Cassar was interviewed by CraveOnline about working on 24, his interesting thoughts on the 24 movie (which he is not involved in), and his new upcoming series Terra Nova. Here’s the 24 stuff:

CraveOnline: After eight years of 24, were you just like, “You know, I need a challenge?”
Jon Cassar: Yeah, so I went and did The Kennedys. Then after The Kennedys I said I needed a challenge and I went and did Terra Nova. Look, it’s fun as a director to do all sorts of things. This was going to be a challenge and I knew that, and look, my wife keeps telling, “Can’t you just take something easy for a change? Can’t you just take a nice little family drama that takes place in the living room?” and I just keep somehow saying no to those. So, yes, I did pick it as a challenge.

CraveOnline: I really thought that Jack was going to go home to his family in hour three of that last year.
Jon Cassar: Just didn’t happen.

CraveOnline: Was it a big shock when the Billy Ray script didn’t move forward for the 24 movie?
Jon Cassar: Not completely for me just because, remember, we did eight years of 24 and twenty four episodes a year. We mined a lot of story, and the other thing is, quite honestly, I think it’s difficult. The reality is that it’s difficult to do that story because everyone is caught up to 24. I mean, 24 was an influence as far as I think on movies. I think it influenced stuff like The Bourne Identity. It influenced a movie like Salt. You could’ve gone to any of those movies and made that character Jack Bauer and you had your 24 movie. So, I think we sort of fell behind a little, I guess, if you want to think about it that way because all those stories were done. I think that’s part of it, to try to find something new that isn’t going to be a Bourne Identity, isn’t going to be a Salt, not going to be one of those other movies. It’s tough. Even Taken was very much like 24. He was chasing his daughter. So, we mined all that material all ready. So, find a new thing. Not easy.

CraveOnline: It does seem like 24 invented daughters getting kidnapped.
Jon Cassar: That’s very true, actually. We were very good at it.

CraveOnline: Three times in season one I think.
Jon Cassar: Well, yeah. She was kidnapped for one very long time in season one and then it happened in two, I think, and then in three, maybe, too. I don’t remember. But yeah, you want your hero personally involved. That was always based on that.

CraveOnline: That was part of the fun, too, her getting saved midseason and then wondering what would happen next, right?
Jon Cassar: Yeah, but I think it was brilliant on the writer’s part in that first year. I remember watching that show, and look, everyone was doing special agencies and I did La Femme Nikita with Joel Surnow. We did it years ago, and so everyone was always doing that, but the twist that they put in it was the fact that his daughter was stuck in L.A., downtown at night. That changed everything because I can’t identify with Jack Bauer running around getting terrorists, but I can identify with my son or daughter being lost in downtown L.A. So, that made it all different, and I think that they knew that right away which is why they did it as much as they did. That’s why movies do it, too. You want that personal connection.

Joel Surnow, co-creator of 24

After a three-week journey, The Kennedys has found a home.

The controversial miniseries will world premiere on April 3 on the ReelzChannel, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Producers of the ambitious project from 24 executive producer Joel Surnow and writer Stephen Kronish have struck a deal with the independent, family-owned cable network to air the 8-part miniseires, which was abruptly yanked from the History channel on January 7 amid pressure from the Kennedys over its depiction of the political family. At the time, History owner A&E Television Networks told THR that “after viewing the final product in its totality, we have concluded this dramatic interpretation is not a fit for the History brand.” [click to continue…]

The Kennedy's miniseries poster

The Canadian director of The Kennedys says he made changes to the miniseries whenever the History Channel asked him to and was stunned by its recent decision not to air the shot-in-Toronto project.

“We were very surprised,” Jon Cassar said Tuesday night at a Fox network press event for TV critics. “The actual product takes no political stance one way or the other.”

Cassar, who was raised near Ottawa, was an executive producer on the Fox series 24. [click to continue…]

Jon Cassar The Kennedys

THR reports that History Channel has scrapped plans to air the controversial The Kennedy‘s miniseries which was written by 24 co-creator Joel Surnow, writer Stephen Kronish, and directed by Jon Cassar.

Carlos Bernard at 24 Marathon Challenge

Carlos Bernard

He played: Tony Almeida, Days 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7.
What he’s doing now: “I’m producing and starring in a pilot with Deran Sarafian (‘House.’) It’s called ‘The Blue Wall’ and is the true story of an ex-police officer who was chosen by New York mayor David Dinkins to go after corrupt cops. It’s a really interesting story. We’ll see what happens. I still get recognized as Tony. People yell out, ‘Hey, Tony!’ That’s good. It means they enjoyed me on ’24.’”
Which series he’d watch a marathon of: “‘Dexter.’ I like that show. It has great acting, great writing and really strong directing. That’s one of the few shows that I watch.”

Check out the full interview – with responses from Gregory Itzin, Necar Zadegan, Jon Cassar, and Lou Diamond Phillips, over at TV Squad.

Now that the new TV season has started I thought it would be interesting to take a look at where the 24 crew went after the series ended a few months ago. Fans that have watched the DVD bonus features probably know that the cast and crew were very close to each other, and that’s proven by this list – many of them chose to work together on future projects.

Dexter

Dexter logo
Chip Johannessen became showrunner of Showtime’s hit series Dexter last December, and brought along some 24 crew with him including Manny Coto (writer and executive producer), director Milan Cheylov, costume designer Jim Lapidus, and the Emmy-winning David Latham (editor). One of his first orders of business was creating a new recurring character named FBI Agent Walker – nice! Also look out for Peter Weller (Christopher Henderson from Season 5) to show up soon as a recurring character.

Jon Cassar Emmy Award

Looks like another show to watch – Jon Cassar is one of the best directors out there, and David Fury is a very strong writer. Nice little 24 reunion on this show which sounds pretty interesting. Congrats Jon!

EXCLUSIVE: It will be an even larger 24 reunion on Fox’s upcoming prehistoric drama Terra Nova, which is executive produced by Steven Spielberg and Peter Chernin. Long-time 24 director-executive producer Jon Cassar has joined the 13-episode midseason series as an executive producer and regular series director. He joins fellow 24 executive producers Brandon Braga and David Fury who are executive producing Terra Nova. (Braga also serves as the series’ showrunner). Cassar, who won an Emmy for his directing work on Fox/20th TV/Imagine’s 24 and shared the show’s 2006 best drama series Emmy, will direct multiple episodes of Terra Nova following the pilot episode, which is being helmed by Alex Graves. “This is a huge coup for us,” said Dana Walden, chairman of 20th TV, which is co-producing Terra Nova with DreamWorks TV, Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment and Chernin Entertainment. “Jon is one of the best directors we have ever worked with, and this project is a huge priority for our company.”

Director Jon Cassar

Dreamworks has named former 24 director and executive producer Jon Cassar as the director of upcoming feature film “Motorcade”. The studio is hoping to nab Ryan Reynolds for the starring role.

The studio hopes to get the picture into production by late summer or early fall 2010, and DreamWorks is eyeing Ryan Reynolds to play the disgraced Secret Service agent who happens to be in the wrong place at the right time when the U.S. president is kidnapped in New York.
