Necar Zadegan

Here’s an interview where Necar Zadegan (24‘s Dalia Hassan) reminisces about working on the series and her Broadway debut in Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo.

“I miss it. It’s a wonderful show, a wonderful show to work on. All the actors are so solid on that show and the writers and the producers… It just makes your job so much easier, you can just show up and work. I love working with Cherry Jones. She’s a New Yorker, we actually just had lunch the other day. It was great to see her again. She’s brilliant to work with. We really got the opportunity to work opposite each other in 24 and she’s just a wonderful actress. She gives a lot, she gives you a lot — and that feels really good because you have a lot to work off of.”

Carlos Bernard at 24 Marathon Challenge

Carlos Bernard

He played: Tony Almeida, Days 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7.
What he’s doing now: “I’m producing and starring in a pilot with Deran Sarafian (‘House.’) It’s called ‘The Blue Wall’ and is the true story of an ex-police officer who was chosen by New York mayor David Dinkins to go after corrupt cops. It’s a really interesting story. We’ll see what happens. I still get recognized as Tony. People yell out, ‘Hey, Tony!’ That’s good. It means they enjoyed me on ’24.’”
Which series he’d watch a marathon of: “‘Dexter.’ I like that show. It has great acting, great writing and really strong directing. That’s one of the few shows that I watch.”

Check out the full interview – with responses from Gregory Itzin, Necar Zadegan, Jon Cassar, and Lou Diamond Phillips, over at TV Squad.

Now that the new TV season has started I thought it would be interesting to take a look at where the 24 crew went after the series ended a few months ago. Fans that have watched the DVD bonus features probably know that the cast and crew were very close to each other, and that’s proven by this list – many of them chose to work together on future projects.

Dexter

Dexter logo
Chip Johannessen became showrunner of Showtime’s hit series Dexter last December, and brought along some 24 crew with him including Manny Coto (writer and executive producer), director Milan Cheylov, costume designer Jim Lapidus, and the Emmy-winning David Latham (editor). One of his first orders of business was creating a new recurring character named FBI Agent Walker – nice! Also look out for Peter Weller (Christopher Henderson from Season 5) to show up soon as a recurring character.

Necar Zadegan

If you’ve ever watched The Event you’ve probably recognized a lot of actors from 24 – Željko Ivanek, Bill Smitrovich, Tony Todd, Ian Anthony Dale, Omid Abtahi, and D.B. Sweeney just to name a few. Today you can add one more to that list as Necar Zadegan has been cast on the show.

NBC’s The Event — which has been giving off some serious 24 vibes in recent weeks — has tapped one of that show’s stars for a potentially recurring gig. Actress Necar Zadegan, who recurred as the wife of IRK President Omar Hassan during the show’s eighth and final season, will play a mysterious character named Isabelle. It’s probably worth noting that former 24 boss Evan Katz is now an exec producer on The Event. It’s all starting to make sense, right?

Congrats, Necar!

Q) What are the recent projects that you are working on?
A) I just wrapped the finale of “24.” We were shooting a little longer than we expected. I am also working at the Marc Taper Forum on a really great play called “Bengal Tiger” and we run through the 30th of May. Then, I’ll be heading up the Frameline Festival where my film Elena Undone opens. Shortly after that, the film I worked on last year will be released called Unthinkable.

Q) What can you tell us about the final season of “24″ and about your character Dalia Hassan?
A) I love this season! I love it so much. The character of Dalia has really grown so dramatically over the course of the season. She has gone from bitter wife to worried mother to martyr’s wife to widow. Now, I am a world leader. That’s what’s been going on all in one day. I watch the show and I watched the show before being on it. I think it is just a great show, but is just unbelievable this season. They have taken the show up a couple notches this season. The next few episodes coming up are just terrific.

Q) What made you want to be a part of the show?
A) I didn’t know it was going to be the final season of “24″ when I started working on it. What really made me want to be a part of it was that I loved the show. I think it is one of the absolute best shows on television ever. At the time when it first came out, it was really ground breaking and to be a part a show that sets a standard for television is a wonderful opportunity. Besides that, I always look at the character first and the biggest real draw was Dalia Hassan. This is a character I wanted to play all my life and I didn’t realize I would get the opportunity to play her so early in my career. I thought it would be later. She’s such an elegant and strong woman. It’s a real joy to research her and create her with the writers. I always saw her as this way in my head and then the character came my way in the shape of Dalia Hassan. I was really eager to jump on it.

At first, Zadegan, knew only that she would be First Lady of a fictional Middle Eastern country. “I’m a researching actress,” she says. “I pored through many of the accounts of famous political families.”

She decided they have muted reactions. “For a life in politics, emotional people need not apply.”

That’s fortunate, because her character has had a lot of reasons to crumble. Within 14 hours, she’s learned that her husband was having an affair … and their daughter was captive … and their daughter had escaped, barely surviving a bomb … and now the worst: Terrorists will release a radiation bomb in Manhattan, unless her husband is handed to them; he may volunteer to do it.

She was considering possible accents, when the show hired Anil Kapoor (the game-show host in “Slumdog Millionaire”) to play her husband. Zadegan adjusted her accent to fit.

She found herself playing a different generation. “I’m really not much older than my daughter (Nazneen Contractor),” she says. That could be fixed with hair, makeup and acting.

She may not be an Amazon, but she’s certainly hardy. She stands 5-foot-9 and looms larger.

“I’m a heel girl – three, four inches.” That’s fine for “24,” a world of big roles for (sometimes) big people.

More pictures from the 24 set for episodes 15/16 directed by Brad Turner. The scene being filmed involved Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) running out of a building with lots of pigeons around him. You can also see Renee Walker (Annie Wersching) in a bulletproof vest and President Hassan’s wife (Necar Zadegan) and daughter Kayla (Nazneen Contractor). They appear to be hailing a taxi. Oddly though, no sign of Anil Kapoor (President Hassan) anywhere on set – feel free to speculate what that means for the fate of his character.
