You may have been watching the newly released 24 trailer and wondering which actor plays this frequently seen sniper:

Cliff Simon

That would be none other than Cliff Simon, best known for portraying Ba’al in Stargate SG-1. The official Cliff Simon fansite has his character listed as “Russian Sniper” with an appearance in the first episode of the season.

Akbar Kurtha plays Farhad Hasan. He can be spotted briefly in the leaked “Survive” promo – walking alongside his brother Omar Hassan (Anil Kapoor), Omar’s bodyguard Tarin Karoush, Jamot (played by Navid Negahban), and being led by Cole Ortiz (Freddie Prinze Jr). As a refresher, here’s the casting call for Farhad Hassan (then known as Hashemi):

Farhad Hashemi, Middle Eastern, 30s – 40s. Hashemi is the Secretary of State of a fictional Middle Eastern country, and his brother is the President. He does not completely trust the Americans, and he is reluctant to enter into a peace treaty with the United States.

Director Jon Cassar

Dreamworks has named former 24 director and executive producer Jon Cassar as the director of upcoming feature film “Motorcade”. The studio is hoping to nab Ryan Reynolds for the starring role.

The studio hopes to get the picture into production by late summer or early fall 2010, and DreamWorks is eyeing Ryan Reynolds to play the disgraced Secret Service agent who happens to be in the wrong place at the right time when the U.S. president is kidnapped in New York.

Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald are producing.

Billy Ray continues to work on a script that was originated by Hans Bauer and Craig Mitchell.

The drama has been a priority for DreamWorks and was one of the projects Tom Cruise seriously considered when “Live Free or Die Hard” helmer Len Wiseman was attached.

Reynolds, who will next star in the Martin Campbell-directed “Green Lantern” for Warner Bros. next spring, has not signed on at this point.

Cassar left 24 after completing season 7 to pursure a feature film career – he will unfortunately not be involved with the upcoming eighth season. In the mean time, Cassar has kept busy directing the recently aired Criminal Minds episode “Haunted” for CBS and the upcoming Fringe episode “Earthling”.

Battlestar Galactica fans were excited when not one but two former BSG cast members were hired for the eighth season of 24 – Katee Sackhoff as CTU analyst Dana Walsh and Callum Keith Rennie as russian mobster Vladimir Laitanan. Viewers of Battlestar Galactica know they had quite the history together and many were hoping they’d have an on-screen reunion of sorts.

Unfortunately, Katee said in her most recent Q&A that she doesn’t share any scenes with Callum Keith Rennie on 24. “When [Callum] came on to 24, I was so excited! I was like “yay!” and then I never worked with him.”

Despite word of 24 filming a season 8 promo in New York next week, it turns out they actually filmed there today! The scene involved Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) running down a street with gun drawn screaming “Don’t move!” and then jumping and sliding across the hood of a yellow New York City taxi cab.

Millennium Biltmore Hotel

24 filmed scenes at 650 South Spring St, Los Angeles CA on September 28th-30th. Residents there reported that a SWAT team and a black SUV pulled up to a building with Jack Bauer getting out of the vehicle and entering a building firing off shots. Freddie Prinze Jr (Head of CTU Field Ops Cole Ortiz) and Matthew Yang King (CTU Swat) were also there.

Over the next two days (October 1st & 2nd) the crew will be filming at 506 South Grand Ave, Los Angeles CA. That’s the location of the Millennium Biltmore Hotel (pictured right) in downtown LA. Many feature films and television series including Ghostbusters, Spider-Man, Daredevil, NYPD Blue, and CSI: New York have used that location to fill in as New York.

Finally, it appears as if there will be some filming done in New York City after all – not for an episode, but for promotional footage. A search is currently underway in the area for a Kiefer Sutherland stand-in for next week. You may recall the 24 season 7 TV spots with Jack Bauer walking past famous DC landmarks like the Washington Monument – it sounds like this will be something similar. So 24 fans in New York, be on the lookout for Kiefer!

Stunt double Sera Trimble posted a picture on her blog with Nazneen Contractor who plays 24’s Kayla Hassan. Kayla is the daughter of President Omar Hassan (played by Anil Kapoor) who is the target of an assassination attempt.

Stunt double Sera Trimble and 24 actress Nazneen Contractor (Kayla Hassan)

You might be wondering, like me, why Nazneen Contractor would require a stunt double. Trimble’s blog description says “I enjoy nothing more than driving cars to their limits on different surfaces. Much of the time not working is spent broadening my driving techniques in different vehicles. I have experience driving with Pursuit Crane and Ultimate Arm systems, various camera rigs, stunt techniques i.e – 180’s/reverse-180’s, 270’s, 360’s, etc. and helicopter work.”

It would seem to me that Kayla Hassan’s life is in danger and she becomes involved in some type of car chase during the mid-season episodes (episode pair 11 and 12 are currently filming now). Back when Nazneen Contractor’s role was extended from two episodes to thirteen episodes, she said “I hope [my character] ends up being kidnapped”. It appears as if her wish was granted.
