In its first major development decision since taking the programming reins at Showtime as entertainment president, David Nevins is close to greenlighting his first pilot, a psychological thriller, from former 24 executive producer/showrunner Howard Gordon. Ben Affleck, hot off the No.1 opening of his crime caper The Town, is circling to direct. He has read the script and is very interested contingent on availability. If dates could be worked out, this would mark Affleck’s TV directorial debut.

Tentatively titled Homeland, the drama is based on the Israeli format Prisoners of War from Keshet Broadcasting, the Israeli company behind Fox’s midseason comedy series Mixed Signals. Gordon and fellow 24 executive producer Alex Gansa co-wrote the project on spec with Gideon Raff, the creator of the original series.

Two showrunner powerhouses — “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy and “24″ executive producer Howard Gordon — are teaming for new procedural TV drama.

The Emmy-winning duo are near a deal at Fox for a put pilot order on an as-yet-untitled project.

Though story details are scarce, the 20th Century Fox TV project is being called a high-concept character-driven supernatural procedural about a psychiatrist that deals with people facing their worst fears and phobias. Though each week will deal with a different case, the show will not necessarily be a crime drama.

Murphy and Gordon will write and executive produce the series together. A deal with Fox is not complete, yet given the auspices behind the project, sources say a pilot order is likely.

David Fury quits Terra Nova

David Fury

Fox’s ambitious “Terra Nova” is losing one of its big-name writer-producers. Sources say “24″ veteran David Fury is off the series.

Fury was one of several heavy hitter producers on the prehistoric family drama, along with fellow Steven Spielberg, Peter Chernin, Brannon Braga, Jon Cassar, Aaron Kaplan and Katherine Pope.

Sources say Fury, who was collaborating on the pilot script with Braga, left due to “creative differences.” Braga will remain the showrunner.

The show recently added Allison Miller (“Kings”) to the cast along with previously tapped star Jason O’Mara.

The shakeup comes after “Terra Nova” was already pushed back from its original midseason launch plans. Fox plans to air the pilot in May, then launch the show in the fall of 2011.

Not such a good sign to have an extremely talented writer such as Fury quit over “creative differences” early on. In some more upbeat news, Joseph Hodges (production designer on 24 seasons 1-7) has apparently joined Terra Nova as well.

Bruce Willis and Justin Long in Live Free or Die Hard

Remember rumors of a Die Hard/24 crossover? They gained a bit more credibility today, with actor Justin Long (who co-starred in Live Free or Die Hard) confirming on video that a script for the Die Hard/24 movie was “imminent”.

“For a while, there was talk of, they were going to combine ‘Die Hard’ with ’24,’ ” Long said. “It was going to be Kiefer Sutherland’s character in it [to which we responded with a very suspicious, raised brow]. I’m not kidding!” Long insisted. “I think there was a script that had been imminent,” he said seriously.
