Jack Bauer

This is heartbreaking – the end of an era.

20th Century Fox TV and Fox appear ready to end the long-running hit after this season, the show’s eighth.

Studio and network execs declined comment — but it’s believed that the final decision will be made in the next day or two. Move is not a huge surprise, but still reps the end of an era for Fox.

“24” helped usher in Fox’s ratings surge in the 2000s, as the franchise — along with “American Idol” and “House,” among other series — led the network’s adults 18-49 ratings crown.

But the cost of producing “24” has continued to increase, while ratings have dipped. A one-time critical darling, “24” has also received its share of knocks from reviewers this season.

The studio is said to be considering shopping “24” to other nets — but given the thriller’s age and price tag, it’s believed that the interest from other outlets will be limited.

But even as bell tolls for “24,” the franchise is far from over. Sutherland and the “24” team have been keen on turning the show into a movie property, and have made major strides in recent months toward making that long-term goal a reality.

Congratulations to Annie and Stephen!

The clock is ticking down … to a new baby.

24 star Annie Wersching and her actor/comedian husband Stephen Full are expecting their first child, they tell PEOPLE exclusively.

The couple is “ecstatic,” says Wersching, who plays Renee Walker opposite Kiefer Sutherland on the show.

“Feeling great” during her pregnancy, Wersching, 32, notes that she’s “craving mint chocolate chip ice cream!”

The couple married at their Los Angeles home in September 2009.

THR: There’s been a lot of rumors about “24″ this season. You’ve got a sense of the ratings so far, what’s the call?

Reilly: It’s a very tough call. It’s a huge part of our legacy, and there’s not a lot of shows that could do a 9 share against the Olympics. Tremendous sales asset for us still; a show we’re so very proud of creatively. So it’s not an easy call.

If you read between the lines, Reilly doesn’t say anything about wanting the show back like he does with Human Target and Lie To Me.

NBC’s Angela Bromstad says the idea has been floated for NBC to pick up the series, but it’s unlikely (due to the same cost reasons):

THR: If Fox passes on doing another season of “24,” would NBC be interested?
Bromstad: I think it would be expensive for us. It’s been floated. It’s all going to come down to how strong our development is.

THR: But you wouldn’t rule that out as a fit for NBC?
Bromstad: I wouldn’t rule it out. I wouldn’t think it’s likely, but I wouldn’t rule it out.

This shouldn’t be a surprise if you’ve seen some of the recent set pictures, but Katee Sackhoff appears to be yet another single-season character on 24. If we do happen to get a Season 9, she won’t be part of it.

“Battlestar Galactica” alumna Katee Sackhoff is set to star in ABC’s untitled Richard Hatem drama pilot.

Sackhoff, who co-stars on Fox’s “24″ this season, fielded multiple offers this pilot season before settling on the Richard Hatem project.

The crime drama centers on a beautiful female detective (Sackhoff) who teams with a disgraced ex-cop to solve crimes and untangle the conspiracy that sent him underground.

The producers of “24″ are tightlipped about any plot twists on the real-time action drama, but it’s understood that Sackhoff’s story line would allow her to take on a new series for next season even if “24″ was to return for a ninth cycle.

Sackhoff, who played Kara “Starbuck” Thrace on “Battlestar Galactica,” toplined NBC’s drama pilot “Lost & Found” last season.

She is repped by Gersh and Bleu.

The back-to-back episode of 24 this year is scheduled for Monday April 5th, 2010 (8:00PM-10:00PM). Typically these have occurred earlier around the mid-season point, but this one will be a few episodes later.

Cherry Jones said last month that episodes 15, 16, and 17 “are three of the most exciting [episodes] of the entire eight years of 24. I couldn’t catch my breath reading them, they were just thrilling. I didn’t know how I was going to wait until I got the next script to see what happened!”

The 24 Season 8 finale (also a two-hour event as usual) is scheduled for May 24th, 2010 (8:00PM-10:00PM). Note how it’s listed as a “season” finale and not a series finale, so let’s hope that is a good sign.

The Live Feed created a list of endangered TV shows and the chances for a ninth season of 24 aren’t looking too great according to them:

“24” — Fox’s action-drama continues to perform well, with its eighth season generating numbers in the low-to-mid 3s. Yet “24” is pricey to produce and has little syndication value. Producer Twentieth is exploring the option of spinning off “24” into a theatrical movie, signaling that this might be the Bauer’s final, real-time day-long adventure. Another long-shot option would be shopping “24” to another network. 40%

Twentieth Century Fox’s film and TV studios are conspiring to finally bring hit television series “24″ to the bigscreen.
The film side has hired scribe Billy Ray (“State of Play,” “Flightplan”) to pen the script for the feature version. Ray’s pitch, which takes Jack Bauer to Europe, was a hit with Fox execs and producers of the high-concept television series.

Ray also wrote and directed “Breach” and “Shattered Glass.”

Script is said to have come through “24″ star Kiefer Sutherland, who’s also an exec producer on the series — and is said to be eager to turn the long-running TV skein into a feature franchise.

Feature would be produced the TV show’s key exec producers, including Sutherland. “24″ was created by Robert Cochran and Joel Surnow, and while exec producer Howard Gordon runs the show through his Real Time Prods. banner.

Brian Grazer’s Imagine Entertainment, which produces the show along with 20th Century Fox TV, also would be involved.

Insiders cautioned that a “24″ feature is still very much in the preliminary stages. There are a number of factors influencing how quickly it moves ahead, including the fate of the TV show.

Fox doesn’t have a deal for a ninth season of “24,” and hasn’t yet decided whether to order another season. Insiders said the network is waiting to see this week’s ratings before making a decision, but the betting is that this will be the final season.

Even if Fox winds up passing on another year of “24,” 20th Century Fox TV could possibly shop the show to other nets. In that case, a feature might have to take a back seat.

“24’s” producers have been kicking around making a film for several years, and came close to doing one several years ago.

But the prospect of shooting a feature while the show was still on the air was a daunting one for the cast and producers. Critics and fans of “24″ have always enthused about how the show is produced like a feature — and the film studio would want to move most of the “24″ series crew to work on the feature. That’s difficult to do while “24″ is in production, as hiatuses aren’t nearly long enough to shoot a movie.

The show’s producers did take advantage of the writers’ strike to make a TV movie, however. “24: Redemption,” which aired prior to the show’s seventh season in 2008, was nominated for five Emmys.

The allure of spinning a popular TV series into a bigscreen film is hard to ignore for studio execs, since there is a built-in audience and brand awareness. “24″ has also been a mammoth hit for the studio in foreign markets, which suggests that a feature adaptation would travel well.

Fox saw big rewards from turning TV toon “The Simpsons” into a feature film. In 2007, “The Simpsons” grossed $183.1 million domestically and $343.9 million overseas for a worldwide cume of $527.1 million.

Studio saw strong returns when adapting TV series “The X-Files.” Feature film “The X-Files,” released in 1998 when the show was still on the air, grossed $83.9 million at the domestic B.O. and $105.3 million overseas for a total cume of $189.2 million.

The second outing wasn’t nearly as successful, however. “The X-Files: I Want to Believe,” released in 2008, six years after the series went off the air, grossed just $68.4 million worldwide.

Jack Bauer

Jack Bauer may finally hit the big screen. Though Fox has yet to decide whether to pick up a ninth season of 24, an insider confirmed that the film side is in talks with Billy Ray (State of Play) to write a screenplay for the franchise. Word is the scribe came in and pitched his version of the flick.

Any movement on a film may hinge upon the show’s future with the network; Fox toppers Peter Rice and Kevin Reilly will likely want to see how the show performs over the next few weeks before deciding whether to commit to another season of Bauer racing the clock. Through Jan. 31, 24 is down versus last year by 10% in total viewers (11.9 million versus 13.3 million) and by 15% in adults 18-49 (3.9 versus 4.6). The drama remains Fox’s third-most watched show behind American Idol and House.

A decision is needed soon; a source close to the show said the producers are preparing to write the 23rd and 24th episodes of the current season so they need to know whether to pen a series finale. Production on the drama is scheduled to wrap March 24.

In January, star Kiefer Sutherland told EW that he’d love to do a movie (“It would be a two-hour representation of a day”) and thinks the TV show can actually be done at the same time. ”I actually tried to convince a few people of this. In a media world that is changing unbelievably fast, a television series can either act as a great trailer for a film, or a film can act as a great trailer for a television series. And I think the first person who actually does that is going to change the way television interacts with feature films.

“I think the resistance to it is because, in my father’s generation, if you did films, you didn’t even think about television,” Sutherland continued. “That was a death knell. And if you did television, you wouldn’t be allowed to do films. That was when we had three networks. We have six hundred now, and if I want to see Paul Newman in a movie, I don’t have to go out. And so the game has changed. And I think we’re going to have to adjust with it.” – With additional reporting from Nicole Sperling

Nominated for an Emmy as mentally unstable First Lady Martha Logan in ‘24,’ Jean Smart says she wanted to return to the hit Fox show — but it’s now too late.

“Well, it’s done now, I think,” Smart told Moviefone at Wednesday’s premiere of ‘Youth in Revolt’ in Hollywood, of the possibility of returning to ‘24.’

“I would have loved to have gone back again,” Smart said. “But I don’t know. I think Martha is in a rubber room somewhere. They kind of inferred that she offed herself. I think she did.”

I believe that Smart is referring to a conversation between Olivia Taylor and Aaron Pierce in episode 7×13: Olivia says “It must’ve been hard for you, what happened to her” to which Aaron replies that he’d rather not talk about it.

I don’t think the writers told Jean Smart any specific information, she is probably just speculating about her characters fate like the rest of us. I loved the Martha Logan character, so I hope she isn’t dead!

Mary Lynn Rajskub modeling a "Dammit Chloe" tee

COUNTING THE HOURS: Mary Lynn Rajskub admits she isn’t sure how much more time the long-running Fox show “24″ has left on the air. “I definitely think the end is in sight, but having said that, I don’t know if it’s going to be this year. I’m dying to know, but I think we’ll have a better idea later this month,” says Rajskub of the show returning with a two-night premiere Jan. 17-18. “If the numbers are exceptional, there’s a really good chance we’ll do another year. I think we need at least another year, but there are so many factors that go into it.”

At this point, the show certainly isn’t lacking fans. “It’s so strange because it’s our eighth year, but the numbers of our fans are still growing somehow. People always want to tell me the story of how they watch the DVDs one after the other. I think the writers are really good at being like, ‘You have to watch the next one that’s coming!’” notes Rajskub, who plays the quirky computer genius Chloe O’Brian.

“It kind of amazes me that the show still works, to tell you the truth. We screened the first episode and I’m on the show, and I was still just as excited. I think the show writing is better than ever. You kind of know what the concept is by now. You watch Jack (Kiefer Sutherland), who does want to live a normal life and go with his family, but you know as a viewer, ‘Well, that’s not going to happen.’ But the way that it’s done sucks you in. You know he’s going to be torn away, but how they do it and the enjoyment of that happening still works.”

Director Jon Cassar

Dreamworks has named former 24 director and executive producer Jon Cassar as the director of upcoming feature film “Motorcade”. The studio is hoping to nab Ryan Reynolds for the starring role.

The studio hopes to get the picture into production by late summer or early fall 2010, and DreamWorks is eyeing Ryan Reynolds to play the disgraced Secret Service agent who happens to be in the wrong place at the right time when the U.S. president is kidnapped in New York.

Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald are producing.

Billy Ray continues to work on a script that was originated by Hans Bauer and Craig Mitchell.

The drama has been a priority for DreamWorks and was one of the projects Tom Cruise seriously considered when “Live Free or Die Hard” helmer Len Wiseman was attached.

Reynolds, who will next star in the Martin Campbell-directed “Green Lantern” for Warner Bros. next spring, has not signed on at this point.

Cassar left 24 after completing season 7 to pursure a feature film career – he will unfortunately not be involved with the upcoming eighth season. In the mean time, Cassar has kept busy directing the recently aired Criminal Minds episode “Haunted” for CBS and the upcoming Fringe episode “Earthling”.
