Freddie Prinze Jr. “hated every moment” of 24, disses Kiefer Sutherland

Just about every actor who has ever worked on 24 has nothing but great things to say about Kiefer Sutherland, until now. During an interview with ABC News at Comic-Con, actor Freddie Prinze Jr. lashed out against former colleague Kiefer Sutherland. If you were wondering why there wasn’t any audio commentaries on 24’s eighth season DVD, behind the scenes drama like this might be partially to blame…

The 38-year-old father of two grew into different roles on TV and film until he co-starred in “24” alongside Kiefer Sutherland in 2010 — a role that almost led him to quit acting, Prinze told ABC News.

“I did ’24,’ it was terrible. I hated every moment of it,” Prinze said. “Kiefer was the most unprofessional dude in the world. That’s not me talking trash, I’d say it to his face, I think everyone that’s worked with him has said that.”

He continued, “I just wanted to quit the business after that. So, I just sort of stopped.”

Prinze, who was at San Diego Comic-Con while promoting his new Disney XD series “Star Wars Rebels,” dropped off the map for a while and even ventured into other projects.

“I went and worked for Vince McMahon at the WWE for Christ’s sake and it was a crazier job than working with Kiefer,” he said. “But, at least he was cool and tall. I didn’t have to take my shoes off to do scenes with him, which they made me do. Just put the guy on an apple box or don’t hire me next time. You know I’m 6 feet and he’s 5’4.”

Here’s the audio clip of Freddie badmouthing Kiefer:

Update: some responses from people involved in the production below.

24‘s dialogue consultant Marci Michelle (and close friend of Kiefer) called Freddie a “jackass” on Twitter and said “Ahhh, love it when actors are promoting a new gig by bashing their last gig. Pathetic.”

Scott Meslow tweeted “I PAed on 24, and Kiefer Sutherland was a hell of a lot more professional than Freddie Prinze Jr.” and followed it up with “It’s less a legitimate gripe and more a basic misunderstanding about how leading actors are shot in pretty much everything.”

Former co-stars Sara Gilbert and Aisha Tyler defended Kiefer Sutherland on their morning show “The Talk” today saying that they’ve both had great experiences working with him and that he was very polite. Check out the video here.

Update: Kiefer responds

Kiefer issued a response:

“Kiefer worked with Freddie Prinze, Jr. more than 5 years ago, and this is the first he has heard of Freddie’s grievances,” Sutherland’s rep tells E! News in a statement. “Kiefer enjoyed working with Freddie and wishes him the best.”

Nice to see Kiefer taking the high road and keeping things classy.

Freddie Prinze Jr. is now officially on my list of
ungrateful little shits
!!!

Who’s Freddie Prinze Jr?

Who else is on that list

Bullshit Kiefer is 5’7. And like he’d say that to Kiefer’s face…unless he had a suicide wish.

5’9 according to imdb…

Oh yeah, so what the hell is Prinze talking about

He worked with Kiefer as a fellow actor.
He worked with Vince McMahon as part of the WWE Creative Team.

NO WAY IN HELL CAN THE LATTER BE MORE REWARDING.

Guy can’t get any roles so he tries to stay relevant by bad mouthing people. I guess he’s following Shia’s lead.

Maybe he should’ve quit life, instead of acting.

I don’t think I’ll be able to watch Season 8 the same way. And wasn’t he a fan of 24 and supposedly watched it all with his wife? Was that bullshit or did he just start hating Kiefer when he found out he was a bit shorter than him? And you gotta wonder who is the unprofessional one, if he talks like this about fellow cast members. I’m sure if Kiefer was an asshole on set, we would have long heard about it, and if he was so unprofessional the show wouldn’t have gone on for nine seasons with him as the lead.

Only thing Chico Jr has achieved is make me think he’s unprofessional. Too bad, because his 24 character was alright.

Exactly you don’t hear Kiefer talking like that, stupid twat

Cole ortiz is a boss
But who in the blue hell is Freddie Prinze JR
I feel sick when ever I watch season 8
It’s a shame because I wanted Freddie Prinze JR to be in 24 season 10

NO I ACTUALLY LOVE SEASON 8

Thats JACK FUCKING BAUER YOU CHATTING SHIT ABOUT

If I remember correctly, the actress who portrayed Dina Araz in S4 did not have good things to say about Kiefer in her book. I think she said Kiefer was always “angry” or something like that.

Shohreh seems to be better at voicing her concerns respectfully than Freddie.

Yeah, but still it’s funny.
She played the terrorist. Did she really expect to live through the day? I though for a pretty minor badguy (or girl) Dina lived way too long, actually.

She claimed that her character was supposed to be on the show for more episodes but Kiefer had her ‘fired’… A close relative of mine interviewed Kiefer for a movie press junket and said he was very intimidating. I can imagine him being very intense and that probably rubs some people the wrong way.

If Freddie had said Kiefer’s angry, alright, we cannot comment on that as fans.
If he had said he hates Kiefer, fine, his right to hate him.
But unprofessional? All those behind the scenes videos on the DVDs say the exact opposite. Kiefer seems very focused and eager to do the best job he can. There is absolutely no evidence that was ever presented to us fans to support Freddie’s claim. He’s just pissed off because he may have personally not gotten along with Kiefer, it seems. Which is fine, because not everybody gets along. But you don’t have to gossip and ruin a show for fans and try to badmouth the lead actor with random claims.

It just makes me like his character less, which like I said, is too bad.

I can understand James Cromwell not being okay with the direction the writers took his character, but Freddie’s stuff just seems like kindergarten talk to me. “Oh no, he’s shorter than me. Why isn’t he taller? Why can’t everybody be taller than me? Look at how tall I am. He was so unprofessional. They made me take off my shoes. I like wearing shoes. Why did I have to take them off? I hated it. Make him stand on a box. I like people standing on boxes. I had to quit kindergarten because he refused to be taller and more professional than me.”

I’m not prepared to say he’s wrong. Kiefer is an A-list actor and portrays one of America’s most iconic action heroes. It’s plausible that bit actors like Freddie Prinze, Jr. are usually too nervous to say anything for fear of it ruining their career. I can see how Kiefer might be hard to work with. I mean, we’re all jumping to his defense because “he’s Jack Bauer” and “how dare people insult the hero we love,” but frankly, none of us really has any idea.

I would have expected more people to come out with these statements over the years though if it were true. I’m not sure how you could ‘bottle’ it for so long when he’s worked with so many different people.

Exactly. 24 has had more actors than most other shows. New cast almost every year. They cannot ALL be keeping quiet. But it’s also the way Freddie talks here… seems really childish to me. But it’s true, of course we have never worked with Kiefer ourselves, so how could we know.

Also the show was dead for 4 years. If there were problems on set, actors would tell about it. Not like that, of course (the way Freddy said is was offensive).

Freddie is a naff actor in my opinion anyway, and TBH I think the scenes with FPJ were not that great anyway I think its all just jealousy because Kiefer is sought after and he just isn’t, go back to the rock you just pushed over pal. What a joker !!!!

*Maybe* Kiefer is difficult to work with. Who knows. He’s been described as ‘intense’ and is seriously invested in the quality of the show. As mentioned, that might be intimidating to some people and personalities inevitably clash. However, to call Kiefer ‘unprofessional’ – which is a different thing altogether – without any evidence aside from an absurdly petty shot at the man’s height is…well, need it be said?

Kiefer is just an intense actor that’s it. He takes his role as a character very personal and he acts the same way. He’s an awesome actor. That’s all that matters!

Wow commit career suicide, much?

This is going to reflect far far worse on FPjr than Kiefer because of the timing and because blaming the fact that Kiefer is short (seriously?) and unprofessional (when it’s clear he is anything but) led to his own career decline just seems too weird.

I think there are plenty of other more legit things to call him out on and plenty of reasons acting careers stall.

Most actors/artist can be hard to work with, but does that matter? Everytime I watch “24” I see Jack Bauer on the screen and have never spent a moment with Kiefer. I think the performance is top notch because I never once see the actor playing the character I love on screen. I see Jack. And I really don’t care if the man is a dick (and he my very well be one) because the work speaks for itself.

Can’t believe Freddie Prinze, Jr. said about his stint on 24’s eighth season which was the “final year” of the series before Live Another Day aired. His character Cole Ortiz wasn’t as good of a sidekick for Jack Bauer than Chase Edmunds (James Badge Dale) nor Mike Doyle (Ricky Schroder).

shut up Freddie Prinze Jr! Kiefer Sutherland is professional actor! And Freddie Prinze Jr is Bitch and Complex! The season 8 that Freddie Prinze Jr played is enough for him! And Freddie Prinze Jr is less than Kiefer Sutherland! Hey guys why you are silent and not support of Kiefer Sutherland! And god dam it Cassar that you not support of Kiefer Sutherland! shut upFreddie Prinze Jr! keifer Sutherlan is professional actor!and Freddie Prinze Jr is son of Bitch and the season8 that Freddie Prinze Jr played is Enough for him ! and Freddie Prinze Jr is less than keifer Sutherlan ! hey guys why you are silent and not support keifer Sutherlan ! and god damn you cassur that you are not support keifer Sutherlan ! die cassur!

Please check your sources. Information don’t look legit at all.

Yeah, nothing legit about an audio clip. 24 Spoilers, have you found Alex Hewitt?!

Hated every moment his ugly cunting face was on screen. People with big, bulging eyes of peace have no business being actors… let alone playing field operatives!

What did Freddie expect out of Kiefer? Honestly, I find it hard to believe that Kiefer is unprofessional on set. Maybe he had a negative perspective on him, who knows? He has a right to hate him, but I think he exaggerates to some extent. Kiefer is an intense actor, granted. He takes his job seriously, granted. What more does he expect?

And he is talking about this 6 yrs later?! Looks pathetic and desperate to me… Get over it

Love the way he timed his comments to come out when people are interested in 24 again.

OR HOW ABOUT HE JUST AIN’T ANY GOOD LOL AND HE IS DISSING IT BECAUSE HE CANT ACT LMAO…. IT BE OK HATERS WANNA HATE LOL. HE JUST JEALOUS THAT 24 IS THE BEST DRAMA LOL DONT HATE SWEETIE GET WITH THE PROGRAM AND BETTER UR ACTING SKILLS, JEALOUSLY IS A B***

There was the interview Mary Lynn Rajskub did on some late-night talk show in which she recited her internal monologue: “Kiefer is just really intense—don’t take it so personally”, or some such.

In the end, who’s to say whether or not Kiefer is difficult to work with? Nevertheless, this is certainly not the most graceful way (nor timing) of voicing such a disparity—it just comes off as childish and, well, kinda pathetic.

It’s also possible that he’s just totally joking around.

I never liked the little bitch. He stole my woman. Hopefully now she’ll dump his butt XD

I don’t think the show would have lasted even half as long as it has if Kiefer was genuinely an assehole. Look at how many of the cast and crew have been returning season after season, not to mention the likes of Stephen Fry and Peter Weller wanting to appear on the show. You don’t get actors of their calibre wanting to work on a show the lead actor is unpleasant to work with. Kiefer’s always struck me as being very gracious; he’s always been very vocal in how grateful he is to the fans for giving him the opportunity to do 24. Sounds like a case of the green eyed monster paying FPJ a visit….

Sounds like sour grapes to me and that he has some male diva and spoilt brat issues! Use to like Freddie Prinze Jr, not anymore! You’re on a job on a top rated show and you’re going to complain and sulk about trivial things like taking off your shoes in some scenes? Big deal!!!! I mean, how much did you get paid???? Some people are so ungrateful and don’t realize when they’ve been given a great opportunity. Geeeezzzz!!!!!

Yvonne Strahovski on working with Kiefer:

“He powers through it all, and is really is such a pro. It’s been really awesome observing him work. He’s knows the show inside out, back to front. He knows the character. He moves at a really fast pace. Being one of the producers on the show as well, he makes changes to the script, and always admire his additions, what he puts into this show outside of just the acting. He contributes in such a smart way to this show that it’s been a nice learning curve for me to watch.”

Well, in the end one of them has had several successful TV series, and one of them disappeared (and no one missed them). One of them just came back into a very successful return, because his fans missed him so much. Difficult actors who no one likes to work with – don’t get work. Simple. They fade away, and show up later on reality tv. We have numerous examples. The facts speak for themselves IMHO.

Good points. See Shannen Doherty, Shia LaBeauf, Lindsay Lohan and countless others.

Freddie is one bullet away from ending his career like his dad.

He hated acting in 24….?
Well, one vs. a million that hated his acting in 24…!
He was awful! No wonder… If you do not like what you are doing or working on it shows!

Who does he think he is messing with? I would expect that kind of immature rant from a 20 year old, wow! It’s funny b/c I remember hearing that his wife was impossible to work with and one time she refused to continue with a scene b/c someone had “tuna breath” and she demanded they leave.

Freddie sounds so childish. Yes, sometimes people don’t get along. That’s to be expected. But to lose one’s composure over a matter after so many years is really kind of inexplicable unless there is a great deal of jealousy involved here. And he was especially petty in pointing out that he is taller than Kiefer. How Freudian! Yeah, that is a sure sign of the green-eyed monster.

I recall meeting James Cromwell back in summer of 2007 and he said that he hated working on 24. He didn’t say anything bad about Kiefer or any of the cast, he was just disappointed with the story they gave his character. He hated the way he had to a scene where his character put a gun up to his son’s head. He said it wasn’t what he signed up for. I think he even mentioned this again on a TV show over here called the Panel.

It’s a legitimate gripe if you don’t do your homework on the show.

Ah… and a quick google search lead me to this very article on this very site which will back up my claims on ol’ Philly Bauer.

You should also grab the sound bite off The View where Sara Gilbert and Aisha Tyler talk about their experiences in Day 2 and Day 4

Freddie is such a pussy he just wants attention first of if he actually had a problem with Keifer he wouldn’t have done it over 4 years after he stopped working and he would of said it nicely and not come off as a complete jack a**. And of course he says this when 24 comes back on air and right here http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zQcr3Gw4apk he says he “really enjoys working with Keifer” he’s a loser he’s trying to get attention and he’s using 24 as an excuse for him not getting acting jobs I hate him so much

Love the response from the Kiefer camp. Nothing, and I mean nothing pisses off your badmouthers more than politeness.

What does a persons height have to do with their ability as an actor or their degree of professionalism? We all inherit the characteristics of height from our genetics from both parents and the circumstances of our birth.
Jack Bauer looks pretty big on screen. He dominates with his presence. I understand that is due to the actors ability to project that and the use of camera angles and other technical aspects of making a film.
From my knowledge of Kiefer Sutherland’s public persona, he does not shy away from his height. He frequently jokes about these things. All seems pretty professional to me.
FPjr has not done himself any favours by his unpleasant and disrespectful rant.

Today on CBS’s “The Talk”, they discussed this story during the second segment of the show. Two of the women on the show had roles on 24 and neither of them said they saw this behavior – they both thought Kiefer was very professional. Women are Sara Gilbert who played Paula in S2 (character died early in the season), and Aisha Tyler who played Marianne Taylor in S4)

He’s just mad that he’s a talentless hack who in reality cannot act and got outshined by Kiefer Sutherland who had to carry his monotone ass the entire season .

Freddie Prinze was a lowlight on S8 and one of the least interesting, least believable characters in the series history IMO – to think that some ’24’ fans at the time even thought that Cole could be a replacement for Jack or should be part of the series going forward is laughable.

Prinze can’t compare resumes to Kiefer – he’s clearly the type who, when confronted with his own lack of success, has to belittle others that have it just to bring them down to his level. Classic narcissist.

Actually, when one looks back at Season 8, the casting was one of the weakest of all – from Cole to Dana Walsh to Hastings to Arlo to Hassan to Rob to Taylor, there were a lot of black holes to compensate for by the stronger characters like Jack, Logan, Renee, Ethan and Chloe, along with the whole Russian group of politicians.

Whoa, whoa. Hassan was in *no way* a ‘black hole’ in Season 8’s casting. Neither was Alison Taylor.

The bottom line is that Kiefer IS Jack Bauer and without him there is no 24. Prinze, Jr. was just another sidekick and certainly not the best of sidekicks. Bring back Tony!!!

I’m not defending Freddie Prinze Jr….He should have kept his mouth shut….but let’s not pretend Kiefer is an angel.

Didn’t he get busted for starting a fight in New York City around that same time (and there were real fears he might violate the terms of his DUI probation in California, thus delaying 24s eighth season?)

This may be nothing more than a personality conflict, but, legit complaint or not, Prinze never should have made this public.

He’s no angel when it comes to personal stuff, but the topic of discussion is Kiefer’s professionalism and behavior on-set. The general consensus is that he’s a very serious and focused actor on-set, which can definitely rub people the wrong way. It’s definitely suspect because it’s been 4 years since S8 wrapped, and we haven’t really heard anyone else say bad things about Kiefer. If he was truly unprofessional and rude someone would’ve complained sooner.

Also, digs at poor Kiefer’s less-than-average height are lame, especially if you’re off by a solid 5 inches.

I never made digs at Kiefer’s height….although I would argue that jeopardizing a television production, not to mention all the white and blue collar jobs associated with it, because of a DUI, is unprofessional.

I’m not saying Kiefer is anywhere near as bad as Charlie Sheen in this department, and I think Kiefer is a great actor, but he does or did have certain serious personal problems that might have cost 24 producers money, or had the potential to..

For some reason people were more upset with Mel Gibson for an anti-Semitic rant during a DUI arrest than the actual act of drunk driving by itself.

I’ve known good people killed by drunk drivers, so I have no tolerance for drunk drivers.

But Prinze still should have kept this to himself.

I was talking about Prinze, not you! Sorry if that didn’t come across right.

He’s just mad he didn’t get asked to return in 24: Live Another Day.

Kiefer is 5’9”. Freddie is officially an untalented jerk.

Freddie’s (alleged) bad experience with one actor made him want to quit the acting profession which is why he had a sulk and hasn’t done much acting since? Who’s the unprofessional actor supposed to be again? LOL

Sounds to me like Freddie wanted to get his name back in the media and what better way than making controversial comments about a former co-star who is already being talked about in the media recently. Kinda backfired on him with him looking like a 5 year old throwing a tantrum and Kiefer being talked up more by others and keeping it classy himself. At least it kept the media talking about 24 a bit more, so thanks for that Freddie, now go crawl back in your hole.

Kiefer is definitely unprofessional as a writer. As for actor-wise, can’t tell.

nobody’s perfect… not even jack bauer hehee… but freddie must have had a reason for hating him so and i wonder what could that be! kiefer’s reaction, though, totally disproves his negative comments… and now i love and respect him even more. damn!

I can’t help but wonder if Prinze knew he was talking to a reporter or, if he was, that he was on the record?!?

Listening to that audio, and given his cadence and tone of voice, it sounds like he thought he had no idea this would be quoted for mass distribution. Maybe he thought this was a private chat,,and he was too dumb to realize otherwise?

I have one thing to say in response to Prinze’s ridiculous statement…and that is…:

SCOOBY-f*cking-DOO!!

And then he did the 2nd one…Jesus!

I have one thing to say in response to Prinze’s ridiculous statement…and that is…:

Young Freddie was awful in Season 8. He couldn’t even bring justice to his own character! Terrible acting on his part! So he really needs to shut up!!!!

Keifer handled that was class! Not sure how Jack Bauer would have handled it though…

You know, I was on the fence about whether this was true until I actually listened to Prinze Jr.’s comments for myself. Wow, he comes off like SUCH an arrogant jerk when you hear the quotes for yourself. I’m surprised this gained any traction at all. He comes off as utterly incredible.

Agreed. He sounded very arrogant and narcissistic in that interview.

Well that’s one thing Freddie and I have in common: we both hated every moment he was on 24.

I’ve worked as a background performer (Extra) for a number of years. And I’ve seen all kinds of personalities on set.

Kiefer is many things but unprofessional he isn’t, in fact he is one of those rare stars who takes the time to introduce himself to everyone new on set including us lowly extras. He will ask you your name and if you come back again another day to work he will say hello and even remember your name. Always friendly charming and professional on set. I could name a number of stars who aren’t, but I won’t.

Freddie’s interview in which he sounds slightly inebriated in, is the only unprofessional thing here I would say.

The fact that he also sort of takes a swipe at his time working with WWE and McMahon in a slightly disparaging manner in the same breath says volumes as well.

When I first saw the headline about this story I thought it was going to say that Kiefer was such a good actor that Freddie Prinze jr wanted to give up acting as he could never match up to him! How wrong was I?!! How unprofessional to pick on an actor’s height, its hardly Kiefer’s fault he’s not 6 feet tall!

I would be willing to wager The only reason Freddie even has a career is cause some producer at ABC felt bad for the kid cause of what happened to Freddie Prinze Sr.

I would love to look Freddie in the eyes and ask him what his dad would think of him trash talking a former co star. His Father has 100 times the class and professionalism that Ol Jr. has.

Hey, like it or not, it’s the business. There are many people who are very difficult to work within film and television. Some with that deserved reputation are Clint Eastwood, Sean Connery, Bruce Willis, Barbara Streisand, and on and on. All are extremely talented. If someone does not like working with Kiefer or any one else who may be tough, then they shouldn’t. But they don’t need to cry about it and seem so shocked and hurt that it causes them to want to leave the business! and if they do want to leave….goodbye and good luck finding another job that pays as much.

People, this is all a publicity stunt. Prinze knew he would get negative attention, but in Hollywood attention is attention, and when your in a career slump like his, any attention is good. And he’s doing some new Disney thing, just trying to bring light to that fact by dissing his old gig. Frankly I’m happy kiefer is intense it makes the show good.

Darkest knight of Mystery Inc

except that “Some new Disney thing” is the new star wars animated show. Trust me he doent need to bring any light to anything dealing Star Wars: Rebels.
No this is just Jr being a little whiney unproffesional baby.

In a lot of ways its right out of the George Takei I hate Bill Shatner because he had more scenes than I did book.

I also think prinze is very immature to come out with this and is thirsty for attention. I just looked at his filmography the dude hasn’t had a good gig in like 10 years. He probably came to the set of 24 thinking people would treat him like a god and that he could joke around, and kiefer wasn’t having that he wanted his best work so was probably tough with him, which is totally ok you don’t want an actor that doesn’t take his work seriously and kiefer probably expects the best from people. Which, btw, after seeing she’s all that kiefer IMO has every right to work prinze because he’s on the same level as Lindsay Logan and Kim kardashian basically…. Famous for being famous. If it wasn’t for Chico no one would have heard from this talentless hack

What’s the difference between Freddie Prinze Jr and a pilchard?

One’s slimy and horrible with fucking big bulging eyes.

The other’s a fish.

That joke totally reminds me of Craig Ferguson.

That article mentions Prinze alleging Kiefer turned up drunk on set which I didn’t hear on the audio but maybe he said something later regarding that but its a pretty serious and damaging allegation. I don’t believe it at all. That would definitely be something that would have leaked out before now if there was any truth in it.
I don’t see any other actors on the show backing Prinze up but plenty backing Kiefer.

Guess payday was a hated moment too…

Freddie sounds like an insecure person. Funny too because before seeing this I honestly believed him to be the most miscast actor ever put on the show. He doesnt come across as a tough guy at all plus his acting is shit. I would compare his rant as going on a show like All In The Family and talking shit about Caroyl Oconor. Kiefer is a great actor and regardless of his proffesionalism on set, which im sure is fine, he makes a good show, which is more than I can say for…. I forgot the douche bags name already.

I don’t like the way Freddie talked about Kiefer. However, non of us has worked with him. Besides, Kiefer might have forgotten at some point that he had two identities before his crew, that is, Kiefer the actor and Jack Bauer the character, probably he becomes a little more tough to get things moving as the character.
However, whatever it is, we don’t expect any one to be perfect.
People will love you for what you en some will hate you for that as well.
So, Freddie hates you, I say his a bitch.
Great work Kiefer, I love you for that.

Sounds to me like Freddie is the unprofessional one. It’s not cool to dis your fellow actors in my opinion. The audio clip of Freddie’s interview left me not liking him.

Grow up, Freddie.

No worries Kiefer had a far better career with far better movies. All we need to see and hear is on film. Only the irrelevant complai half a decade later.
